Chapter 13

Maxim

Ivy turns to stone underneath my hands.

The same hands I’d use to choke the ever-living fuck out of the Master, if given the chance.

“Come now, commander,” he says, “we can be honest with one another. You needn’t be worried about revealing too much. I saw changes in the human female after the Fireblood commander claimed her as his mate while staying in my zoo.” The Master squints at me through the mask, the only sign that my silence is vexing to him. “Since this one,” he says, jutting his chin in Ivy’s direction, “doesn’t have the marks, the power to control the earth element, or a change in hair color, it’s obvious.”

I tilt my head. “If the proof stands before you, then why would you pose such an asinine question? Is it because you have yet to find your mate?”

The Master’s gaze narrows to thin slits, and I refrain from provoking him more. Inciting his rage will only put Ivy in danger, and that is not something I’m willing to risk, no matter how satisfying it is to taunt him. He has the upper hand in this situation, and I would be a fool to forget that just to satisfy my ego.

“I have yet to see your birthmarks light up,” I say, keeping my tone mild and almost disinterested, “but the power you have is very real. How is this possible?”

My adversary smirks. However, none of the fury leaves his eyes. The white inside is vibrant and pulses with this rage. “All of your questions will be answered in time, as will mine. Come with us, offering no resistance, or I’ll be forced to take drastic measures—starting with eliminating the source of your power.”

He looks pointedly at my mate, and I tremble with the effort it takes to keep from killing him. His warriors would avenge him quickly and Ivy could get hurt in the process or end up dead if I were to fail to protect her. This painful truth is the only thing preventing me from going completely insane at hearing her life being threatened.

“Commander or not, faction leader or not,” I say, “you are the one who has authority over your people. I want your vow that you will not allow anyone to hurt her or the kielie. That includes yourself.”

The Master grins, but it holds no light-hearted emotions. If anything, it’s a mask that covers the evil just below the surface, similar to the one on his face. “You assume much about me, Earthblood. What if I have no honor, no sense of integrity that’ll ensure I keep my word?”

“If you didn’t, you would not have offered me a choice.”

His smile disappears like dust carried away by a strong wind. “Follow me.”

“Stop,” I say in Koraxian. Cobalt obeys, as does the Master. He spares me a glance, and I lift my chin. “The vow. I will have it, or you will not have me. Alive.”

He pauses for a moment, then exhales. “What is said cannot
